BTEI Programme

The following two Major Awards are to be awarded to those upon completion of The Back to Education Initiative (BTEI). The BTEI is funded through the Department of Education and Skills and is administered by Longford & Westmeath Education & Training Board (LWETB)

in Community Health Services
& Early Childhood Care and Education

These awards provide the necessary training for students who wish to work alongside professionals in the care & childcare sector.

On completion of the course students will be equipped with the attitude, knowledge and skills necessary to work as members of a health care and childcare team.

Students who specialise in this area will be in a strong position to meet the employment opportunities that exist in acute hospitals, community care health centres, general practices, and hospitals for older people, childcare centres and private care and childcare settings within communities.

At the end of this course, graduates will be able to enter the Health Service & Childcare sector with a set of professional, recognised skills with which they can commence their career. They also have the option of continuing their education at third level.

Opportunities exist for care & childcare assistants in hospitals, nursing homes, with private agencies and childcare facilities in the community. Many of the modules on this course are common to the fields of caring for both adults and children.  This will allow students to be more flexible and diverse in securing employment or progressing to further education.

In addition to school leavers, this course will be of interest to adult learners who aim to return to the work-force and to people from other countries who aim to gain employment in healthcare in Ireland.

Students who complete the course successfully will obtain:

  • QQI Level 5 Major Award in Community Health Services (5M4468)
  • QQI Level 5 Major Award in Early Childhood Care & Education (5M2009)
  • Patient Manual Handling
  • Basic First Aid
