What is the Back to Education Initiative Programme (BTEI)?

The Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) provides part-time further education programmes for young people and adults. The aim is to give people an opportunity to combine a return to learning with family, work and other responsibilities.

Who can take part in a BTEI course?

Anyone who has left full-time education early can take part in a course being offered, but priority is given to those with less than Leaving Certificate level of education.

How much does the course cost?

Individuals will have different entitlements.  Free tuition is available if you are in receipt of:

  • an unemployment payment
  • a means-tested social welfare benefit
  • a medical card
  • Or a dependent of any of the above.

If you are unwaged with less than upper second-level education you are entitled to a reduction in fees. For anyone else, full tuition fees are charged.

All fees will be discussed after participants complete the course application form. Applicants will then be contacted by the coordinator before the course commences to inform them of any fees that may apply.

Course Details

This course is run on a part-time basis – three days per week from 9.30-3.30pm. Learners will study eight QQI level 5 components.

Learners will also have to opportunity to achieve certificate in First Aid Response, Patient and Manual Handling, Hand Washing Techniques and Elder Abuse.

Garda Vetting

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of completing registration for this programme.

Work Placement

All students must secure and complete mandatory 12-day (100 hours minimum) work experience placement as part of this course.

Assessment

Written and practical assignments as well as examinations in each module will be carried out

Job Opportunities

Opportunities exist for Healthcare Assistants in hospitals, nursing homes and with private agencies within the community.

Certification

Learners who complete the course successfully will obtain:

  • QQI Level 5 Major Award in Community Health Services (5M4468)
  • Patient Manual Handling
  • Basic First Aid
