Level 5 Infection Prevention And Control (5N3734)

Level of Award:

National NFQ Level 5 or European Framework of Qualifications (EQF) Level 4.

Credit Value:

15 Credits.

Course Aim:

This module aims to cover the general principles of infection prevention and control – from practical hand washing techniques to the decontamination of equipment and management of exposure to blood-borne viruses – emphasising key roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals.

Entry Requirements:

Learners will be required to complete a Pre-Assessment test in our centre to determine their academic level, unless they have QQI Level 4 Major Award or a previous Level 5 Component Award qualification.

Course Delivery:

Our training is delivered in a learner-centred, friendly and relaxed learning environment to ensure each learner is given every opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities in order to succeed in their caring role. Sessions are delivered using a variety of methodologies involving class tuition, group discussions, role plays, skills demonstrations and simulated situations.

Course Content:

Section 1: General principles of infection prevention and control

Section 2: Chain of infection and the various types of micro-organisms

Section 3: Adhering to standards when decontaminating equipment, to include cleansing, disinfecting and sterilisation

Section 4: The management blood-borne viruses


Examination 40%, Skills Demonstration 40%, Learner Record 20%.


Following successful completion, the learner will be awarded the QQI Level 5 Component Certificate in Infection Prevention & Control 5N3734.


Learners who successfully complete this module may use this level 5 component certificate as credit towards the following QQI Major Award: Level 5 Community Health Services 5M4468 or Healthcare Support 5M4339.
