Level 5 Intellectual Disability Studies (5N1652)

Level of Award:

National NFQ Level 5 or European Framework of Qualifications (EQF)Level 4.

Credit Value:

15 Credits.

Aim of the Programme Module:

This programme module aims to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence in the causes, range and effects of intellectual disabilities and develop awareness of social models of support and role of various professionals in responding to the needs of persons of intellectual disability.

Entry Requirements:

Learners will be required to complete a Pre-Assessment test in our centre to determine their academic level, unless they have QQI Level 4 Major Award or a previous Level 5 Component Award.

Course Delivery:

Our training is delivered in a learner-centred, friendly and relaxed learning environment to ensure each learner is given every opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities in order to succeed in their caring role. Sessions are delivered using a variety of methodologies involving class tuition, group discussions, role plays, skills demonstrations and simulated situations.

Course Content:

Section 1: Context of Intellectual Disability

Section 2: Examination of Current Service Provision

Section 3: Holistic Care of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and that of their carers and families

Section 4: Multidisciplinary Team


Assignment 60%, Examination – Theory 40%.


Following successful completion, the learner will be awarded the QQI Level 5 Component Certificate in Intellectual Disability Studies 5N1652.


Learners who complete this module can progress towards the full QQI Level 5 Major Award in Community Health Services 5M4468 or Healthcare Support 5M4339.
